Why Assam?

Nestled in the vibrant northeast of India, Assam is a region teeming with potential and rapid economic growth. Spanning an area of 78,000 square kilometers and home to a population of 31.2 million, Assam is characterised by its rich natural resources and a dynamic economy. Over the past decade, Assam has emerged as one of the fastest-growing economies in India, boasting a remarkable compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.62%.

With a Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of $69.5 billion (nominal), Assam has shown a robust growth rate of 19% in the last fiscal year alone. The economic structure of Assam is well-balanced among its primary, secondary and tertiary sectors, contributing 35%, 19%, and 46% respectively to the economy.

Assam's Economic Vision for 2030

Assam is set on an ambitious path to reshape its economic landscape by the year 2030. With a strategic vision to double the state's economy from its current GSDP of US$ 69.5 billion in fiscal year 2024 to US$ 143 billion, Assam is aligning its resources and policies to fuel significant growth. The state plans to invest $25 billion in capital outlay by the end of fiscal year 2030, fostering substantial public and private sector collaboration.

    • Holds a global monopoly in Muga & Eri silk production.
    • Produces 97% of India’s Muga silk and 65% of Eri silk.
  • Largest Tea-Growing Region Globally
    • Accounts for over 50% of India's total tea production.
  • Onshore Natural Gas Production
    • Assam contributes approximately 50% of India's onshore natural gas production.
  • Freshwater Resources
    • Home to the Brahmaputra River basin with an annual flow of 537.2 billion cubic meters.
  • National Leader in Other Resources
    • Second largest jute producer with 1.6 million bales annually.
    • Fourth largest in rubber production.
    • Second highest number of national parks with 7 national parks.
    • Along with the Northeast region, houses nearly 66% of India's bamboo resources.

    • Houses 4 oil refineries with a current capacity of 7.1 MMTPA, expanding to 13.95 MMTPA.
  • Longest River Bridge
    • Home to the Dhola-Sadiya Bridge, the longest river bridge in India, spanning 9.15 kilometers.
  • Leader in Onshore Natural Gas
    • Assam contributes approximately 50% of India's onshore natural gas production.
